Orlando Defeats Cavs Legion GC and Jazz Gaming on Friday Night
ORLANDO – What a difference a tournament can make.
Two nights after tipping off the SWITCH OPEN with a victory over Nets GC – followed by a loss to DUX Infinitos – Magic Gaming kept the momentum rolling by taking down Cavs Legion GC and Jazz Gaming and earning a pair of group play series victories.
“We’re certainly a lot more competitive in the SWITCH OPEN than we were in the SLAM,” said Magic Gaming General Manager and Head Coach Jonah Edwards of his team’s performance in the second 3v3 tournament of the NBA 2K League season. “And with a tougher group. That speaks to where we are at right now.”
Magic Gaming Defeats Cavs Legion GC
Game 1: Magic Gaming opened the series with an extremely efficient offensive outing as they went a perfect 9-for-9 from the floor on their way to a 22-18 victory.
Joshua “unguardable” Hunter threw down the game-winning slam, which capped off a 12-point contest. Small forward Matthew “Matty” Grant and power forward Robert “May” May each scored five.
Cleveland point guard Antoine “ANTOINE” Featherstone scored a game-high 14 points.
Game 2: A timely pump fake by unguardable caught Cleveland’s defense off guard and the crafty floor general was able to find May down low for a game-winning lay in as Orlando earned a 21-19 triumph.
Unguardable finished the contest with eight points and five assists, May notched seven points and two steals, and Matty tallied six points and two assists. Orlando closed the matchup on a 9-3 run.
Game 3: ANTOINE caught fire and poured in a game-high 15 points to help Cavs Legion GC hand Magic Gaming a 21-13 defeat. Cleveland went 9-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-3 from deep.
Unguardable led Orlando with nine points and two assists.
Game 4: In big moments, you need your best players to step up and unguardable did just that in the fourth game of the series. The No. 5 overall pick in the 2022 NBA 2K League draft came up with a pair of big steals down the stretch and drained a clutch 3-pointer that not only gave Magic Gaming a 24-22 victory but clinched the series as well.
Orlando’s floor general scored 12 overall, while May buried a pair of critical triples on his way to eight points.
“He looks really good,” said Edwards of May. “I couldn’t be happier for him. He puts a lot of work in on his jumper and tries to make sure he knocks it down when we need it. Today, he was.”
Unguardable Shines in Orlando’s Exhilarating Series Win Over Utah
Game 1: Unguardable went 5-for-5 from the floor and 3-for-3 from long range on his way to a game-high 13 points to lift Magic Gaming to a 23-15 series opening win over Jazz Gaming.
Matty added seven points. Orlando was a perfect 5-for-5 from deep.
Game 2: After an extremely efficient opener, Magic Gaming struggled to find their rhythm in a 21-14 loss to Jazz Gaming.
Utah point guard Ryan “RekCombos” Reteguiz recorded a game-high 12 points, while small forward TJ “Kaaze” Paturzo scored nine.
Game 3: Unguardable delivered a masterful performance as Magic Gaming rolled to a 22-16 triumph.
Orlando’s point guard erupted for a contest-best 15 points to go along with two assists.
Game 4: RekCombos fired off a game-high 15 points as Jazz Gaming handed Magic Gaming a 21-9 defeat and extended the series. Utah went 5-for-6 from long range.
Game 5: With the series on the line, Magic Gaming’s second-year star stepped up in the spotlight. Unguardable torched Jazz Gaming to the tune of a series-high 19 points as Orlando earned a 21-16 victory.
“He’s the best in the world for a reason,” said Edwards. “We’re blessed to have him. When he’s playing what he calls ‘unconscious,’ he’s very, very, very good.”
Magic Gaming’s floor general went 7-for-7 from the floor and 5-for-5 from downtown.
“I definitely felt like I couldn’t miss a shot,” said Unguardable. “My teammates believe that I can make every shot and I believe the same thing. I got the name unguardable for a reason and I’m starting to live up to it because the season didn’t start the best.”
The victory spoiled a strong showing from Rek, who scored 16 points for Utah.
